Short AI Presentations (with a twist)

OIDD 255X, Tambe

Assignment Description

This assignment asks you to make in-class presentations. You are asked to make a fairly short presentation of an application of AI or a current event related to AI that you have seen in the news, the media, or even in person. This should be a context that you find exciting, worrisome, or concerning and that you want to learn more about.

This is a group presentation. Presentations are in groups of about four, although there is some flexibility — some groups may be smaller or larger. You will have a chance to express your preferences of who you would like to work with, and we will assign you to groups if no preferences are expressed. The length of the presentation should be about 1 minute for each person group and you can expect time limits to be strictly enforced. So, a four minute group should deliver a four minute presentation, a five person group should deliver a five minute presentation, and so on. These presentations will be split over two days, the Monday and Wednesday before Spring Break (Feb 28th and Mar 2nd).

Not every member of your group needs to present the material. Given the challenges around red passes for any given student, you should be prepared to cover if someone is missing from the group on that day. As such, the “quality” of the presentation will not be strictly judged, as long as you stay within the time limit.

In general, this is meant as a “getting-to-know-you” exercise. As long as you make a professional and thoughtful presentation, you can expect to receive full credit. Points will be deducted for presentations that go over the limit, if slides are not submitted in time, or if your presentation is of obviously poor quality relative to that of your classmates.

Twist!

To add a twist to this presentation format, all groups have the choice of presenting about a topic that is real or fake. Students in the audience will be asked to fill out a sheet indicating whether they think that the topic of the presentation is real or fake.

Prizes will be awarded for the group (on each day) that gets the maximum number of students to guess incorrectly and to the individual students who are most accurate in their overall assessments.

Deliverables

The first slide in your presentation should include the title of your presentation as well as the full names and (small) pictures of each member of your group. Then, you may want to add slides that cover some of the following points:

  1. Description and example of the AI application, event, or technology
  1. Why you find it interesting and why you think the class should know about it
  1. In what ways you think your area of focus has the potential to transform how we think about AI progress, business, or society

The composition and ordering of the group presentations are available here.

You are asked to fill out this form by February 18th, which indicates the topic of your presentation. TA Pia will look over these to make sure there is not too much conflict among topics. If there is a topic conflict, the first group to have submitted their form has priority, and conflicting groups will be asked to choose something else.

Finally, your presentation slides should be uploaded to this folder by midnight on Feb 27th and please place it in the folder (Day 1, Day 2) that corresponds to your group. It should be titled using the last names of the people in your group, in alphabetical order, e.g. HarrisSmithZhang.pdf. In addition, please have access to a backup copy of your presentation on the day of your talk (e.g. on a laptop that you have with you in class).
